Platypus Aquatic Pool Wheelchair
Pelican Aquatic Wheelchair includes lifting frame for our Pelican Pool Hoist
Overview
The Platypus Pool and Wet Area Wheelchair, designed and manufactured in Australia by Para Mobility, are lightweight, rustproof, self-propelled wheel chairs designed to be fully immersed in salt, chlorinated or fresh water.
The ‘Platypus’ model is used on the ground and ramps while the ‘Pelican’ model includes a lifting frame and straps to be used in conjunction with the Pelican Pool Hoist.
They are lightweight and made from quality furniture grade PVC, which will not absorb the heat if left out in the sun, thus preventing accidental burns, while the strong open weave fabric allows passage of air and water.
The chairs have solid tyres which never go flat and are ideal for leisure centres, hydrotherapy pools, showering and outdoor environments. The Pelican and Platypus Pool and Wet Area Chair has been designed for comfort, safety and practicality, and are easily and safely self-propelled.
The wheels are equipped with hand brakes on each side of the wheelchair for maximum safety and control. The brakes are strategically positioned to allow carers easy access, at hip height, when activating them.
An option is available at time of purchase for the aquatic wheelchair to be manufactured so that it can be user controlled giving them direct access and independence.
The Pelican Pool and Wet Area Wheelchair comes fitted with a lifting frame and straps making it suitable for use on our Pelican Pool and Spa Hoist. When used together with the hoist the aquatic wheelchair can be lifted in and out of the pool for ease of entry and exit.

Aquatic Wheelchair Frequently Asked Questions
How is an aquatic wheelchair different to a regular wheelchair?
An aquatic wheelchair is purpose-built for wet environments, while a regular wheelchair is designed for dry, everyday use. The differences are important for safety, durability and independence around pools and other wet areas.
What is the difference between the Platypus and Pelican aquatic wheelchair models?
The Platypus model is designed for movement on the ground and ramps, while the Pelican model also includes a lifting frame and straps for use with a compatible pool hoist setup.
Can aquatic wheelchairs be used in saltwater and chlorinated pools?
Yes. Aquatic wheelchairs are designed for wet environments including chlorinated pools and saltwater conditions. We recommend cleaning with fresh water after use to increase the overall longevity of your wheelchair.
Can the user self-propel the chair?
Users can self propel the wheelchair although the default model offers hand brakes at hip height on each side for carer control.
An option is available, at time of purchase, for the aquatic wheelchair to be manufactured so that brakes can be user controlled giving direct access and independence.
Where are aquatic wheelchairs commonly used?
They are commonly used in leisure centres, hydrotherapy facilities, pools, showers and outdoor wet-area environments such as resorts and community facilities.
Can I use NDIS funding?
Para Mobility is a registered NDIS provider and is experienced in assisting customers with information for funding applications. We work with occupational therapists and health support specialists to provide customised quotes.
Can the aquatic wheelchair be used with the Pelican Pool Hoist?
The Pelican model may be configured with a lifting frame and straps designed to work with compatible hoist setups for pool entry and exit.
How do I select the right model for my facility?
Tell us about your environment (pool deck, ramps, showers), intended use, and user needs. Para Mobility can recommend the best aquatic wheelchair option.
Why choose Australian made over imported alternatives?
