How the IBIS connects Australians to the people and places they love

For retirement home residents located in Melbourne’s southeast, access to everyday life beyond the village gates had long been limited by transport issues. With lengthy delays for accessible taxis and rising demand on mobility transport services, spontaneous outings often became stressful or not always possible.

After the village invested in a small fleet of IBIS Wheelchair to Car Access systems they gave residents (and their carers) a new sense of freedom.

The Challenge

Residents who rely on wheelchairs often had to pre-book taxis days in advance, wait for long periods in uncomfy weather, limit outings and miss out on activities including medical appointments.

Village lifestyle manager, Victoria, recalls “We could see the frustration and distress, our residents wanted to simply go out for lunch with family or to pre-booked appointments, but the logistics were failing them. The reliance on accessible transport was limited – and that’s an understatement!”

The Solution

After trialling the IBIS Wheelchair to Car Access, the team knew it was the right tool to help their situation. Easy for carers and family members to use, the IBIS allows residents to safely transfer into standard vehicles — quickly, securely, and with dignity.

The retirement village acquired four units which were integrated into their community transport program and made available for staff, carers and families to borrow for personal outings.

The Impact

Faster, easier access to transport which fostered connection, confidence and lifestyle.

  • No more waiting for wheelchair taxis
  • Residents can travel in personal or village vehicles
  • Independent and spontaneous outings were made possible

Frank, 86, shared “I hadn’t been down to St Kilda Beach in years. Last week, I was there enjoying ice cream like a kid again. The new travel system didn’t just get me into the car, it brought back memories.”

Daughter and primary carer Nadia said “For the first time in ages, Mum and I can do things on our own terms. The IBIS takes away the stress and gives us the freedom to enjoy our time together.”

Victoria summed it up by sharing “It’s wonderful to see residents come home beaming. A short ride to the shops or a drive along the coast — those moments mean everything to them.”.

The IBIS isn’t just a mobility device. It’s a doorway to community, empowerment, and joy — particularly for older Australians who want to stay connected to the places and people they love.
