As a venue operator, building manager or public space owner, ensuring your space is welcoming and accessible to everyone is not just a nice-to-have—it’s a legal requirement under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA).
The DDA makes it unlawful to discriminate against a person with a disability in areas including access to public places, facilities, education, and services. If your venue isn’t accessible, you could be unintentionally excluding visitors—and even risking a legal complaint.
Here’s a quick and practical checklist to help you identify gaps in your facility’s accessibility:
1. Entrances & Pathways
- Are your main entrances step-free or equipped with ramps?
- Is the pathway to your entrance wide enough for a wheelchair (minimum 1 metre)?
- Are ramps non-slip and fitted with handrails?
- Is your door easy to open (lever handle or automatic)?
2. Signage & Wayfinding
- Are signs clearly visible and easy to read for those with low vision?
- Do you have tactile or braille signage where needed?
- Are important areas (toilets, exits, lifts) clearly marked?
3. Bathrooms & Change Rooms
- Do you offer at least one accessible toilet with grab rails, sufficient space, and easy-door operation?
- Is there an adult-sized change table or hoist for users with high support needs?
- Are emergency buttons or help systems installed in accessible bathrooms?
4. Facilities & Furniture
- Is there enough clearance under tables and counters for wheelchair users?
- Are counters or reception desks accessible at a seated height?
- Are seating areas available with space next to them for mobility devices?
5. Pools or Aquatic Areas
- Is there a pool hoist, pool steps or ramp to allow water access for people with mobility needs?
- Do you have non-slip surfaces and accessible change facilities near aquatic areas?
6. Parking & Drop-Off Zones
- Is accessible parking available and clearly signed?
- Are pathways from the parking area to your venue smooth and level?
7. Staff & Emergency Procedures
- Are your staff trained in disability awareness and assistance?
- Do you have an evacuation plan that includes people with disabilities?
