Recipients of the Access & Inclusion Award at the ARI NSW Awards of Excellence 2025, sponsored by Para Mobility
On 16 October 2025, at Waterview Bicentennial Park, the Para Mobility team had the honour of presenting Maitland Aquatic Centre with the Access & Inclusion Award at the Aquatic & Recreation Institute (ARI) NSW Awards of Excellence — a moment that recognised not only a facility, but a community and council deeply committed to inclusion.
For years, Maitland City Council has shown what it means to lead with purpose and inclusion, creating spaces that welcome everyone, regardless of age and ability. Their proactive approach to access has transformed Maitland Aquatic Centre into one of the region’s most inclusive and community-minded facilities.
Designed for Everyone
As you step inside Maitland Aquatic Centre and you immediately see, and feel, the difference. The entire venue is thoughtfully designed so that every visitor can enjoy the water with confidence and comfort.
- Accessible toilets and change rooms are equipped with showers, a hoist, and an adult change table ensure privacy and dignity.
- Their Olympic outdoor pool features handrails and a wheelchair ramp, while the indoor 25m pool includes a pool hoist, handrails, and ramp entry for easy access.
- Aquatic wheelchairs are available for patron use.
- Even the outdoor toddler pool welcomes young families of all abilities with gentle ramps and supportive rails.
Beyond the pools, inclusivity continues throughout the entire facility — from automatic doors and accessible pathways to wheelchair-friendly viewing decks and seating areas. The reception desk and café are set at accessible heights, and dedicated accessible parking and public transport connections make visiting easy for everyone.
Perhaps most importantly, the staff at Maitland Aquatic Centre are trained in accessibility assistance, ensuring that every interaction is warm, respectful, and empowering.
A Council That Leads by Example
Maitland City Council’s approach goes far beyond compliance — it’s driven by compassion, foresight, and community connection. By investing in accessible infrastructure, inclusive programming, and staff training, Maitland is setting a benchmark for how local councils can build spaces that truly serve every resident.
Their philosophy is simple yet powerful: everyone deserves the chance to participate fully in community life. Whether it’s a family day at the pool, a swimming lesson, or a moment of independence made possible by inclusive design — these are the experiences that strengthen communities and change lives.
Para Mobility: Championing Inclusion
Para Mobility is thrilled to have sponsored the Access & Inclusion Award, celebrating those who are making a tangible difference in creating accessible recreational spaces. Our team was inspired by Maitland City Council’s leadership and the way Maitland Aquatic Centre demonstrates what access and inclusion look like in action — not as a policy, but as a lived experience.
The impact of Maitland Aquatic Centre extends far beyond its walls. It’s felt by the families who swim together, the children gaining confidence in the water, and the individuals rediscovering the joy of movement.
Through collaboration, commitment, and community spirit, Maitland City Council has shown that when accessibility is prioritised, everyone benefits.
